Supporting Oral and Overall Health
with TotalHealth Wellness
Cancer treatments—such as chemotherapy, radiation, and certain medications—can affect your oral health. Many people experience dry mouth, which increases the risk of cavities, along with mouth sores or infections. Treatments can also affect the gums and bone that support the teeth, increasing the risk of oral health problems, including gum disease. These changes can make it more challenging to keep your mouth healthy during treatment, but extra care and support can help.
How TotalHealth Wellness benefits can help:
-
4 Cleanings a Year
More frequent cleanings help reduce plaque and bacteria, keep gums healthier, and lower risk of dental problems.
-
Coverage for Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)
If gum disease starts, deep cleaning can help stop it from getting worse and protect your teeth and gums.
-
Fluoride Treatments Up to 4 Times a Year
Dry mouth and changes in saliva can increase cavity risk. Fluoride strengthens teeth and helps prevent decay.
Diabetes doesn’t just affect blood sugar, it can also impact your oral health. People with diabetes are more likely to develop gum disease, experience dry mouth, and heal more slowly after dental work. Gum disease can also make diabetes harder to manage, so caring for your oral health is an important part of caring for your overall health.
How TotalHealth Wellness benefits can help:
-
4 Cleanings a Year
More frequent cleanings help reduce plaque and keep gums healthy. Healthy gums can make it easier to manage diabetes and help prevent serious dental problems.

Your oral health and heart health are connected. Research has shown a connection between gum disease and heart disease. Gum disease can contribute to inflammation throughout the body, which is one reason keeping your mouth healthy is important for overall health. Some heart medications can also cause dry mouth, which raises the risk of cavities. Taking care of your mouth is an important part of taking care of your heart.
How TotalHealth Wellness benefits can help:
-
4 Cleanings a Year
Heart disease and gum disease share inflammation as a common factor, so more frequent cleanings help reduce plaque, bacteria, and gum inflammation.

Hormonal changes during menopause can impact your oral health. Many people experience dry mouth, which can raise the risk of cavities, along with a burning sensation in the mouth or changes in taste. Menopause can also increase the risk of gum disease and bone loss around the teeth. Together, these changes can make it harder to keep your mouth healthy and comfortable—but staying informed and proactive can help.

4 Cleanings a Year
More frequent cleanings help reduce plaque and bacteria, and keep gums healthier, which is important as bone and gum changes occur during menopause.

Together, these challenges can make it harder to keep your mouth healthy and comfortable during and after treatment.

Pregnancy changes your body—and your mouth too. Hormonal changes can make gums more sensitive and increase the risk of gum disease. Some studies have found a link between gum disease during pregnancy and pregnancy complications such as preterm birth and low birth weigh, making good oral health especially important. Morning sickness and acid reflux can also increase the risk of cavities.
How TotalHealth Wellness benefits can help:
-
4 Cleanings a Year
More frequent cleanings help keep gums healthy and reduce inflammation caused by pregnancy hormones. They can also helps prevent early gum disease (called gingivitis) from becoming more serious.

Sjögren’s Syndrome is an autoimmune condition that reduces the body’s ability to produce moisture, especially saliva, leading to dry mouth. Without enough saliva to protect teeth and wash away bacteria, the risk of cavities, gum disease, and mouth infections increases. Dry mouth can also make everyday activities like eating and speaking uncomfortable.
How TotalHealth Wellness benefits can help:
-
4 Cleanings a Year
More frequent cleanings help reduce plaque and bacteria, which can guild up more quickly when there is less saliva to protect your teeth and gums.
-
Coverage for Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)
If gum disease develops, deep cleaning can help stop it from getting worse and protect your teeth and gums.
-
Fluoride Treatments Up to 4 Times a Year
Dry mouth makes teeth more vulnerable to cavities. Fluoride strengthens teeth and helps prevent cavities.
-
Additional Oral Exams
Because dry mouth can increase the risk of cavities and other oral health problems, additional exams can help identify issues early before they become more difficult to treat.
After a stroke, taking care of your oral health can be more challenging. Some people may have difficulty brushing or flossing due to limited movement, or experience dry mouth from medications, which can increase the risk of cavities. Difficulty with daily oral care after a stroke can also increase the risk of gum disease and other oral health problems. Maintaining good oral care is an important part of overall health and well being.
